Growing up in New England, Paul Kelley figured his future was likely going to be spent in hockey arenas or at racetracks. His father Jack Kelley, was a college hockey coach that also enjoyed racing ponies at the New England fairs during the summer. From there, their interest gravitated to standardbreds at Baystate Raceway in Foxboro, Ma. and that is where the young Kelley got his first taste of real harness racing.
Kelley attended Colby College and after leaving in 1977, took a job in the athletic department at Boston University. But despite being involved in an athletic department that was part of a national powerhouse hockey program, Kelley longed for what he was missing. Kelley left BU to start working with standardbreds full time. He went from Lewiston, Maine and the Warren Strout Stable, to Pompano and then to Roosevelt and Yonkers working for Leo Bauer and in part, for Ted Wing as well. Kelley credits each of his former bosses with prepping him for his eventual start of his own public stable. In 1985 Kelley left Roosevelt Raceway and started his way at Saratoga Raceway.
Today, Kelley’s stable specializes in 2- and 3-year-old stakes performers as well as top quality raceway stock that compete in some of the industry’s most important events throughout northeast, Canada and on the Grand Circuit. He maintains a heavy presence in the New York Sire Stakes annually.
Kelley spent ten plus years on The Zweig Fund which works closely with the veterinarians and researchers at Cornell University’s large animal hospital, providing funds for valuable equine health advancement.
In 2017 Paul Kelley was honored for his longtime support of the breeding and racing program in New York State with the Bruce Hamilton Memorial Medal.
